Easy Cake Decor with Strawberry Roses

Our May Challenge Theme is Recipe for Leftover. I like to decorate my cake, but I don’t use fancy tools. In fact, I usually use simple supplies I have at home to use it as a tool to decor or as decorations. Most of the time, I make a simple cake to celebrate something at home and decor it in super easy way. For this project, I was making a birthday cake for my mom, and I was thinking about floral cake since my mom loves gardening. But I know I would not waste my time on making icing and making flowers on my chocolate cake. That would time consuming, so I was wondering other floral look to decorate my cake. Then, I start to look for inspiration on Pinterest, and I found this very Easy Strawberry Roses. I think the strawberry roses will be a perfect decoration for my chocolate cake, it will pop and look amazing. And it’s yummy to too, fresh against sweet chocolate cake . But before I move on, let me explain a bit about The Sustainable Pinterest Challenge.

The Pinterest Challenge has had a bit of a reboot for 2022 and is now the Sustainable Pinterest Challenge. Each month I join a group of creative bloggers and we select a pin or two that we feel inspired by and give it a go. Starting in January 2022 the Pinterest Challenge has a sustainable, eco friendly twist to it. All the projects shared will have something about them that involves recycling, upcycling, a general ethos of reducing waste and using what we have. It’s not about beating ourselves with a stick, it’s just about giving thought to how we can make small changes in our lives just a little more sustainable and reduce our impact on the environment.

Last month’s theme challenge was “Welcoming Spring” and I made an DIY Spring Wreath – Upcycling Rattan Basket with Lavender. For this month theme “Recipe for Leftover” and of course a sustainable as a base to any of our challenge projects, I decorate my chocolate cake with less tools and no electrical use in decorating.

Things To Prepare

Basically you would only need a ready cake in any flavor, chocolate spread and fresh strawberries. If you are familiar with glazing, then you need to add sugar to the list, it will be used to glaze the strawberry roses to keep them fresh and shinny. But if you are not sure about glazing, you can leave the strawberries as they are as long as you don’t keep it for days in fridge before serving. Anyway, let’s see what are the basic things that I used to decorate my chocolate cake with strawberry roses:

  • Chocolate cake with chocolate spread
  • Strawberries
  • Toothpicks
  • Small sharp knife (seriously must be sharp, it would help a lot)

How To Make

It’s actually very easy to decor a simple chocolate cake with strawberries roses. And of course, making the strawberries into beautiful roses is honestly not as complicated as it looks. I will try to explain it to you since I didn’t document the process on how I cut the strawberries into roses. Now, gather all the supplies which I’ve mentioned above and follow these easy steps on how to decor a cake with strawberry roses:

1 . Clean all your fresh strawberries and dry them. Get some toothpicks and insert a toothpick into the head of each strawberry. The toothpick will serve as a stem or a handle to a strawberry rose.

2. Get your small sharp knife an make a thin slice on bottom part (part where the toothpick is inserted). Do that 4-5 slices around the first loop of the strawberry. Then do another loop of slices of 3-4 slices, and another loop of 2-3 slices until left the tip of the strawberry. To be clear, you can find the video of making strawberry roses in Youtube including the inspiration pin that I mentioned above.

3 .By the way, I use bottled chocolate spread to cover my chocolate cake. And I use a small plastic bag and cut the tip off one of the corner, fill it with chocolate spread and used it as piping, to decorate the bottom cake. So, no special tools needed to decorate my cake.

4. Make as many strawberry roses as you like and then insert it on top of your chocolate cake. I clustered the strawberry roses on one side of the cake. I used 10 strawberry roses for my 8 inch cake.

Once you’ve tried making those strawberry roses by yourself, you would find it very easy and you will addicted to use the strawberry roses in all of your desserts; like cupcakes, ice cream, cocktails, mocktails, everything! Because it looks absolutely beautiful!

  1. This looks fabulous and chocolate and strawberries is always a great combo. Also it feels a little healthy to have some fruit instead of more sugar!! No need to collect lots of plastic cake decorating moulds and equipment when nature provides eh? I love it.

    1. Couldn’t agree more! But I love chocolate so much and strawberry is just so fresh in my mouth which balances the chocolate taste, so I can eat more, lol! Thank you so much, Julie!

    1. Aww, I’m sure you’ll have tons of fun making those strawberry roses. I even saw how people put the strawberry roses with long stems together in a vase as if they are flowers arrangement. So pretty! Thank you so much, Gail!
